C. READING (2.0 POINTS)
Read the passage and do the tasks that follow.
Super skyscrapers, underwater cities, 3D-printed homes, and holidays in space will all be a reality in 100 years' time, according to the SmartThings Future Living Report. The report presented findings from a survey conducted by Samsung’s SmartThings company with a group of experts on space, architecture, and urban planners. Several futurologists and adults of different occupations also took part in the survey.
The experts suggest that in a century's time humans will be able to live in 'Earth-scrapers', which will go up to 25 storeys underground. They also believe that 'bubble cities' will be created underwater making the depths habitable for humans. They say the way we live, work and play will be totally different to how we do these things today. The authors of the report say that 25 years ago, people could not imagine how the Internet and smartphones would change our lives. They have revolutionised the way we communicate, learn and do daily things. So, it is understandable that the changes in the next century would be even more unbelievable.
Researchers also questioned 2,000 adults about the predictions they thought were most likely to happen in the future. Respondents predict that in the future, few people will go to an office but will work from home and have virtual work meetings instead. People will have advanced 3D printers that will let us download a design for furniture or a food recipe and then 'print' the sofa, table or pizza at home. There will also be less need for visits to the doctor. We will all have a home health capsule which will tell us what the problem is and give us treatment. We will also go into space for holidays and to get resources that we have used up on Earth. A prediction that was missing was about the popularity of English – whether people would still need to study English or not.
For each question, choose the correct option (A, B, C, or D). (1 point)

J = Jane Swaine P = Peter Walsh
J: Please sit down, Mr. Walsh. My name’s Jane Swaine, and I’m the personnel manager.
P: Hello. How do you do?
J: Now, this is just a short preliminary interview. I’d like to chat about your present job and what you’ve done up till now.
P: Yes, of course.
J: Wll, could you tell me how long you’ve had your present position in Weston’s. It is Weston’s, isn’t it?
P: Yes, that’s right. Um, I’m not sure. Let’see. I left university in 2005 – is that right? – yes, 2005. Then, I was unemployed for a bout three months, and then I travelled round America for a few months, so yes, it must be about three years now, in fact.
J: Um, yes. And have you any particular reason for wanting to change jobs? I mean, why do you want to move?
P: Well, I actually like my present job and still find it interesting and stimulating. The salary’s Ok, so it’s nothing to do with money, though you can always do with more. I suppose the thing is that I’m really very ambitious and keen to get promoted, so that’s the real reason.
J: You say you like your job. Can you tell me what aspect you like most?
P: Oh, my dear. That’s difficult. There are so many things. The other people are great, there’s a good co- operative atmosphere, I mean, among the staff, and compared to other companies, the conditions are great. I mean the office itself and the working conditions.
J: Um
P: And then, there’s the fact that they give me lots of room for initiative and let me make decision. You know, that’s what I really like most about the job.
J: Yes, well, we’re looking for someone like that. You know, someone who isn’t a clock-watcher and who isn’t too concerned about working fairly long hours.
P: Oh, I don’t mind that. I’m used to it.
J: And what about your education? You went to Manchester University, didn’t you?
P: Er, yes. After leaving school I started a diploma course in Design, but I decided to give it up and did an Arts degree at university instead.
J: Good, and have you done any courses since?....

1. Chinese 2. 80 minutes 3. longevity 4. (the) society
Tape:
A new study shows the importance of exercise for teenage girls. Researchers analysed data on 75,000 Chinese women aged between 40 to 70. They found that women who exercised regularly as teenagers were healthier than those who didn’t. Teenage girls who did 80 minutes exercise a week had a 16 per cent lower risk of dying from cancer and other diseases. This percentage was 13 for women who exercised more than 80 minutes a week. The researchers said that in general, women would live longer if they did just 15 minutes of exercise a day in their teens.
According to the research, doing exercise as a teen would increase longevity even if they stopped exercising when they were older. Regardless of adult exercise, teen exercise would reduce the risk of illnesses like cancer. Although the findings were based on women in China, the benefits of exercising during the teen years apply to women worldwide. Therefore, schools, parents and the society should encourage teenagers to do exercise regularly. It is an effective way for them to prevent diseases in later life.
