IV. READING

Today, more and more women are actively participating in social activities both in urban and rural areas. Specifically, they have shined brightly in even many fields commonly regarded as the man's areas such as business, scientific research and social management. In some areas, women even show more overwhelming power than men. The image of contemporary Vietnamese women with creativeness, dynamism, success has become popular in Vietnam's society. The fact reveals that the gender gap has been remarkably narrowed and women enjoy many more opportunities to pursue their social careers and obtain success, contributing to national socio-economic development. According to Ms, Le Thi Quy, Director of the Gender/and Development Research Centre under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi National University, gender equity in Vietnam has reached a high level over the past decade. The rate of Vietnamese women becoming National Assembly members from the 9th term to the 11th term increased 8.7%, bringing the proportion of Vietnamese women in authority to 27.3%, the highest rate in Southeast Asia. There is no big gap in the level of literacy and schooling between men and women. Women account for about 37% of university and college graduates, 19.9% of doctoral degree holders and 6.7% of professors and associate professors.

The legitimate rights of women and children are ensured more than ever before with more complete legal documents including laws, conventions and national action plans, among which the laws on "gender equity" mark a turning-point in the empowerment of women.

Mass media also highlights the continued success of women in every field and honors their great importance in modern society, helping to do away with outdated perceptions about traditional women's duties. Many projects on reproductive health care, children protection, and family income improvement jointly conducted by various mass organizations, state agencies and non-governmental organizations have created favorable conditions for women to become involved.

V. SPEAKING

1. List the advantages and disadvantages of working parents. Suggested answer (Câu trả lời gợi ý)

Advantages

Disadvantages

- Being good for children‟s education: they

can get higher education quality.

- Parents have less time to take care of

children

- Children‟s independence: children do some

work which parents don‟t help them with

- Tiredness: working outside + doing

housework → tiredness

- being fairer in doing housework: both

parents work outside → share the housework

- Loneliness: when being lack of parents,

children spend time alone → feel lonely

- Excite: parents‟ lives are more exciting when they have chance to meet people in large social than when they just spend time at

home.

- No helping hand: children cannot do all work in house, but they still have to them alone when parents are not at home

- Good standard of living: when parents have more money, they can buy more things that serves their lives better.

- Safety: little kids may get accidents related to burning or cutting when parents don‟t take eyes on them.

2. Do you think that both father and mother should go to work? You should write and report your answer before class.

Suggested answer (Câu trả lời gợi ý)

In my opinion, in a family, the father should go working to earn money, and the mother had better stay at home and take care of children. It is the fact that when both parents go to work, they can get better finance which leads to a better standard of living. However, they have less time to take care of their home because of after a hard working day, they are all so tired and do not want to spend time doing household chores, which results in a dirty and uncomfortable house. Moreover, the even more importance effect of both parents‟ working is that they do not have time to look after their kids. When parents are not at home, kids may get some home accidents like burning or cutting, they also are easy to feel lonely which may lead to stress and autism. That is why I do not think that both parents go to work is a good idea.

2. Many people think that men should go out to work while women's place is in the home. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Suggested answer (Câu trả lời gợi ý)

Women and men have had different roles in the community since the beginning. Although these differences are slowly converging, due to the genetic inheritance and socio-demographic components, they still exist. It is said that men should be the breadwinners while women are more suitable for housework and childcare. In my opinion, this statement is not completely right or wrong and requires careful consideration.

Firstly, it is assumed that men should go out to work. Undoubtedly, men are better adapted genetically to perform physical tasks. The difference in physical abilities is clearly demonstrated in the sporting arena. Take for example the Olympics, or any international sporting event. It can be clearly seen that these competitions the genders are separated due to inherent differences between the sexes. Similarly, such jobs requiring physical strength as logging or coal mining, should continue to be done by men.

Secondly, it has been argued that women are more suitable for their traditional roles in the home. This statement is true to a certain extent but it largely depends on the society. In certain traditional societies in Africa, females working is frowned upon and is seen as neglecting the family. Whereas in Afghanistan, in general, females are allowed to do little else but stay at home, being a housewife. Consequently, a woman‟s value is largely dictated by the society, culture and history. Nevertheless, to state that her place is in the home is widely considered sexist in modern western societies. Many women nowadays , are in positions of power and changing the world to a great extent. For example, Angela Merkel is the Chancellor of Germany and currently ranked as the world‟s second most powerful person by Forbes magazine. Her contribution is obviously undeniable.

To conclude, differences do exist though these are largely through nature. However, it is a flawed stereotype that women should be at home and the workplace is not for them. This glass ceiling is certainly what should be shattered to assure women of their right to have the equal opportunity in life.
